What is Chief?
Chief is an AI-native agent manager. It sits above coding agents like DeepSeek Harness and handles everything between "here's what I want" and "here's the shipped result": planning what to build, figuring out what comes next, dispatching agents across your projects, and reviewing output before it ships.
Chief uses a BYOA (bring-your-own-agent) model. You connect the coding agents you already use, including DeepSeek Harness, running on your own machine with your own DeepSeek API key. No lock-in, no migration, no second account to manage.
How Chief works with DeepSeek Harness
Your key, your machine. Chief's relay runs the official dsh binary on your computer, the same way you would run it yourself. Your API key stays in ~/.dsh/.credentials.yaml, where dsh reads it. Chief checks only that a DEEPSEEK_API_KEY reference is present in that file. It never reads your key.
Privacy settings pinned on every run. Chief disables DeepSeek Harness session-log upload and telemetry on every run it starts, and each run can write only inside the project workspace. Your own dsh sessions keep whatever settings you chose.
Your choice of DeepSeek model. Chief runs your coding tasks on DeepSeek V4 Pro by default, and you can switch to DeepSeek Flash in Settings.
Pay-as-you-go usage, visible. DeepSeek bills by the token, so Chief's usage card shows the tokens your DeepSeek Harness tasks have used, per model. Your balance stays with your account at platform.deepseek.com; Chief never queries it.
What Chief adds on top
1. Plan and execute complex goals in one shot
Give Chief "add usage-based billing with team plans" and it breaks the goal into dependency-aware milestones, each with acceptance criteria and a review step. You approve the plan once; Chief dispatches DeepSeek Harness, and any other agents you use, through the whole sequence.
2. Proactive management that figures out what's next
Chief looks at project state, understands what's been completed, what's blocked, and what's ready to start, then proposes the next milestones. You make decisions; Chief keeps the pace.
3. Scale agents across your projects
Dispatch DeepSeek Harness to some repos, Claude Code or Codex to others, and see all progress in one dashboard. Chief tracks what's in flight everywhere.
4. Mix the right provider for each task
Chief's BYOA model lets you choose the agent per project or per milestone. Use DeepSeek Harness where it suits the work and keep the rest of your roster for what each agent handles best, all from a single interface.
5. Review between agent output and merge
Chief reviews every completed milestone against its acceptance criteria before marking it done, so running more agents still means reviewed output.
Getting started in 5 minutes
- Sign up for Chief: Free plan, no credit card required.
- Install DeepSeek Harness (version 0.2.0-rc.2 or later) with
npm install -g @deepseek-ai/dsh. - Add your API key: get one at platform.deepseek.com and store it in
~/.dsh/.credentials.yamlas aDEEPSEEK_API_KEYreference underrefs:. Chief's onboarding gives you the exact command. - Import a project and set a goal: describe what you want accomplished in plain language.
- Approve the plan: Chief proposes milestones with acceptance criteria, dispatches the agents and reviews the output.
FAQ
Is Chief a replacement for DeepSeek Harness?
No. Chief manages coding agents; it doesn't replace them. DeepSeek Harness does the coding through dsh. Chief does the planning, dispatching, and reviewing.
Does Chief use my DeepSeek API key or a separate one?
Your key. Chief runs dsh on your machine with the credentials file you set up, so the work bills to your DeepSeek account at DeepSeek's pay-as-you-go rates. Chief keeps a DEEPSEEK_API_KEY in your shell out of its runs so dsh always uses the key in that file.
Does Chief see my DeepSeek API key?
No. Chief checks that ~/.dsh/.credentials.yaml has a DEEPSEEK_API_KEY reference and nothing more. It never reads the key's value, checks your balance, or makes a model call to test it. Your prompts and code go to DeepSeek under the terms you accepted for your API account, the same as when you use dsh directly.
Does Auto mode work with DeepSeek Harness?
Yes. Set a task limit and Auto mode keeps dispatching work within it. Because DeepSeek bills pay as you go rather than in subscription windows, Chief shows token usage per model instead of a window budget.
Can Chief manage DeepSeek Harness alongside other agents?
Yes. Use DeepSeek Harness for some tasks and Claude Code, Codex, Qwen Code, OpenCode, Kimi Code, Muse Code or Gemini for others. Chief dispatches the agent you pick for each milestone from a single interface.
Can I still use DeepSeek Harness directly?
Absolutely. Chief manages background agent work; it doesn't take over your terminal. Use dsh interactively anytime, and use Chief for the work you want to delegate.
